I'm connecting my Apollo 16 (silver) to a late 2013 Mac Pro for the first time. Why isn't the Apollo 16 recognized?

Q: I'm connecting my Apollo 16 (silver) to a late 2013 Mac Pro for the first time. Why isn't the Apollo 16 recognized?

A: First-generation (silver) Apollos require a firmware update to be recognized by the late 2013 Mac Pro (the black cylindrical model). UAD v7.5 and later includes this firmware, so if your Apollo 16 is not being recognized by the Mac Pro when connected via Thunderbolt for the first time, it is likely that an older version of firmware is currently installed on the Apollo. There are two ways to perform this firmware update - either by connecting the Apollo via FireWire and a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter (either the Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter, or a Thunderbolt hub with a FireWire 800 port) to the Mac Pro, or by connecting the Apollo to a different Thunderbolt equipped Mac computer via Thunderbolt.
