Windows Setup - Required Settings

The Windows operating system settings in this section are necessary to ensure optimum stability and performance with Thunderbolt Apollo interfaces. Follow the procedures below before using your Apollo.

Configure Windows for Thunderbolt

Additional steps are required to configure Windows for use with UAD Thunderbolt devices. For details, see this article.

Disable Windows Notification Sounds

Windows notification sounds (such as a "ding" when an alert window appears) can interfere with DAW audio. Follow the procedure below to disable all alert notification sounds.

1. Open the Sound control panel. Control Panel>Sound can be accessed by right-clicking the Windows Start Menu and selecting "Control Panel" from the contextual menu, then double-clicking Sound with the Control Panel window.

2. Click the Sounds tab within the Sound control panel window. The Windows notification sounds options are displayed.

3. Click the "Sound Scheme" drop menu to display the menu items.

4. Select "No Sounds" from the Sound Scheme drop menu.

5. Click the Apply button to activate the new setting.

Important: Ensure the "Play Windows Startup sound" box is unchecked.

Correct setting shown – "No Sounds" scheme is selected in Sound control panel

Avid Pro Tools – Initializing AAX 64 for Windows

Important: To use Pro Tools 11 or Pro Tools 12 with UAD AAX 64 plug-ins under Windows, the following steps are required. The procedure must be performed each time an updated version of UAD software is installed (once for UAD v9.6.1, once for future UAD releases, etc).

Note: These steps are not required when running Windows 10 May 2019 Update (version 1903) or higher.

1. Install the latest UAD software. Be sure to restart the computer after installation.

2. Open the Pro Tools program. The UAD AAX 64 plug-ins are automatically scanned during launch.

3. Click "NO" when Pro Tools displays a message indicating some UAD AAX plug-ins failed to load. This message can be safely dismissed.

4. After all plug-in scans are complete, CLOSE Pro Tools. The UAD AAX 64 plug-ins are now properly initialized and ready for use the next time Pro Tools is opened.

Note: If Pro Tools is not quit after the initial plug-in scan, Pro Tools AAE error -14018, “Unable to locate hardware” and/or other anomalies may occur.
