Setting Input Levels

Enigmatic '82 is calibrated to provide the exact same tone and response as the original amps when used with most interfaces, including Apollo and Volt. Simply connect your instrument to a Hi-Z input, set the channel's preamp gain to minimum, and set the plugin's IN control to its default Hi-Z (center) position.

For optimum performance with other audio interfaces, follow the same guidelines.

Input level guidelines for best tone and response

  1. Connect to your audio interface's Hi-Z instrument input
  2. Set the interface channel's preamp gain to minimum
  3. Set the plugin's IN knob to its Hi-Z (center) position

Enigmatic '82 Controls

Enigmatic has standard amp controls that are always visible, and an additional set of circuit tweaks available to customize the sound. Click Customize Circuit to reveal additional circuit controls and tweaks.

In

Adjusts the input level to the plugin. Hover your mouse over the knob to see the HI-Z and LINE labels.

The plugin input level is calibrated for a Hi-Z input without preamplification. When IN is set to the default center position (HI-Z) and no preamp gain is added, it provides proper operating levels. When using the plugin on hotter signals (such as tracks that have already been preamplified), reduce the IN knob towards the minimum (LINE) setting.

Reducing this knob can provide cleaner tones for hotter instrument signals, such as those from humbucking or active pickups. You can also adjust the knob for more gain to get a range of creative tones.

Tips

  • Hover for values: Hover over the knob, then click the HI-Z or LINE labels to set the control to those values.

  • Input overload: Play your loudest notes. If the input level is too high, the input meter turns solid red. Reduce the input level if this occurs.

  • Persistent IN level: The IN value doesn't change when you load different presets, so you can set the level once and freely browse presets without big volume changes.

Presets

Enigmatic '82 includes a full range of presets designed to deliver classic sounds. The preset browser offers comprehensive tools to browse and organize presets. Click the preset bar (top center of plugin) to select presets from the browser, or click the previous/next (< or >) buttons to cycle through presets.

Tip: For complete preset browser details for all UAD plugins, go here.

Room

Adjusts the amount of room tone mixed into the signal.

Out

Adjusts the output level from the plugin. Adjust this level to work with your specific audio setup.

Amp variations

Enigmatic '82 includes four amp variations. Click a variation name to choose it. Click Customize Circuit to see the amp description.

  • Suede: The Suede amp is compressed and has more gain than other variations, with abundant midrange warmth.
  • Silver: The Silver amp is open with less compression and gain than Suede. This amp features noticeable tube sag and fullness, with a thicker midrange than Cream and Black.
  • Cream: The Cream amp features an extended low-end response, with a strong push in the midrange and high-end frequencies.
  • Black: Compared to the other variations, the Black amp features a higher-fidelity power supply that provides a full-range, responsive, snappy, articulate tone.

Standard amp controls

The following controls are always visible for Enigmatic.

enigmatic-standard-controls.png

Input and Volume (gain)

Input (FET/NOR) selects between the Normal (NOR) input, which has fixed gain, and the FET input.

  • The FET input changes the input characteristics and can add gain. Use the FET Trim control in the Customize Circuit section to adjust FET gain, from sparkly clean to slightly distorted.
  • At very low settings, the FET input can be extremely quiet.

Volume adjusts the gain level of the first gain stage (the clean channel). This stage cascades into the Overdrive gain.

Preamp section switches

Bright toggles the Bright cap on (up) or off (down). See Bright Cap in the Customize Circuit section for details.

Deep / Mid toggles the selected tone on (up) or off (down). The switch label depends on the selected Tone Stack Type (Classic = DEEP, Skyline = MID).

  • Deep (Classic) cuts high-end frequencies, shifting the sound toward the low end.
  • Mid (Skyline) adds a thick midrange boost.

Rock / Jazz switches between two different amp circuits that provide unique gain structures and sounds.

  • Rock provides a punchy tone with a midrange push and higher overall gain.
  • Jazz provides a mellow, softer, scooped blackface-style EQ with lower gain and less mids.

Boost activates the Preamp Boost feature. This removes the tone stack, increasing overall preamp gain. When on (lit), the EQ knobs (Treble/Middle/Bass) are inactive, but Deep or Mid can still be used.

EQ controls

Treble, Middle, and Bass adjust the amp's passive tone stack. These EQ controls are voiced differently based on the Skyline or Classic tone stack selection. Not that EQ knobs are inactive when Preamp Boost is on.

Overdrive channel controls

Overdrive engages and controls the overdrive circuit, which adds gain and saturation. The Volume gain cascades into the Overdrive gain and both contribute to the final gain amount. The available overdrive amount can be adjusted with the Overdrive Trim control.

The Overdrive LED toggles overdrive on or off.

Overdrive Level adjusts the amount of overdrive gain.

Overdrive Ratio adjusts the output level of the Overdrive channel.

Master controls

Master adjusts the tube power amp output level. Increase this control to add power tube distortion.

Presence adds high-frequency sparkle to the sound.

Enigmatic '82 customizations

You can make further tweaks to the sound of Enigmatic and build your own D-style amp using customizations. These controls, and a description of the currently selected amp, are revealed when you click Customize Circuit. You can hide these controls by clicking the X to the right of the amplifier description. Drag left/right or up/down to adjust these controls.

FET Trim adjusts the level of FET input gain. This control is only active when the FET input is selected.

Bright Cap selects one of three bright cap values: 150 pF, 196 pF, or 300 pF.

  • The bright cap is active when the Bright switch is on.
  • Higher values produce a brighter tone.
  • The bright cap's effect becomes less noticeable as the sound is more overdriven.

Tone Stack selects the amp's EQ configuration.

  • Skyline is the "Skyliner" EQ from the later "D" amp era, featuring a more aggressive, higher-gain British sound, with a tighter low end and accentuated mids and highs. Choosing Skyline enables the Mid switch.
  • Classic is the earlier American blackface-style EQ, featuring a slightly hollower sound and less gain. Choosing Classic enables the Deep switch.

Overdrive Trim adjusts the available gain range for the Overdrive channel. The Overdrive Level knob then sets the final gain amount. Note that low Overdrive Trim settings may result in reduced overdrive levels and overall volume.

HRM EQ enables and adjusts the famed HRM (Hot Rubber Monkey) circuit mod. This activates a separate passive post-gain tone stack for the Overdrive channel. HRM is a more mid-scooped EQ with enhanced lows and highs, ideal for pushing the overdrive into heavier or soaring, liquid gain territory. This EQ allows tone shaping when the Treble/Middle/Bass controls are disabled by the Preamp Boost function.

  • Toggle HRM EQ with the button to the left of the label.
  • Drag up/down or left/right on the controls to adjust the EQ amount for each band.
  • HRM EQ is only audible when Overdrive is engaged.

Enigmatic '82 Speaker Cabinets

V30: A UK-built 4x12 with V30 speakers, miked with a 421 dynamic, that provides bottom-end chunk and fullness, making it great for a big lead sound or thick rhythm sounds.

JBF120: A vintage 1968 2x12 "twin" cab with original JBF120 speakers, miked with a 57 dynamic and a 121 ribbon that is very detailed, great for clean and low gain sounds, and excellent for fingerstyle playing. This cabinet is very forward and sizzly when used with more gain.

EV12: A classic '80s EV12 speaker with a massive magnet in a 1x12 cabinet, miked with a 414 condenser. The EV12 is a focused single speaker with a thick and tight bottom end and airy top-end.This is a wonderful, versatile speaker that has no high-pass filter, for more subsonic punch.

Stripped: A 4x12 with greenback speakers in a raw wood cabinet stripped of Tolex and grille cloth, miked with a ribbon 160 and a 57 dynamic. This cabinet delivers power, bottom-end girth, and warmth, making it great for mellowing out overdriven sounds.

JBG125: A custom-made "D" cab with vintage JBG-125, miked with a 421 dynamic. This features a rare speaker with a silk dust cap that delivers clarity with a sweeter top end than the JBF120, providing an articulate sound for cleans with a warmer overall tone.

D-EV12: A rare oversized '70s "D" 2x12 closed-back cab with massive EV12 speakers, miked with a 414. This cabinet was customized for a '70s artist and can be heard on a famous live recording.
