Lion '68 Operation

Live Mode and Preset Mode

Note: Lion '68 is in Live | Preset mode by default. You can use UAFX Control to change footswitch assignments.

In Live mode, the sound reflects the current positions of the knobs, switches, and LEDs on the pedal, and the left footswitch toggles the Live mode effect on/off.

In Preset mode, you hear the settings that are stored as a preset, and the current positions of the knobs and switches do not reflect the sound. Instead, all knob and switch positions are internally set to their stored positions, and the right footswitch toggles the preset effect on/off.

You can store a preset you've made with your own settings by holding down the STORE switch until the green PRESET footswitch LED blinks rapidly (about 0.5 seconds)

Live Mode

To enter Live mode, press the left footswitch. Press the left footswitch again to toggle the live effect on/off. The left footswitch LED is lit red when the Live mode effect is on.


Preset Mode

To enter Preset mode, press the right footswitch. Press the right footswitch again to toggle the preset on/off. The right footswitch LED is lit green when the preset is on.


Note: The left and right footswitch functions can be changed in UAFX Control.

Stored Preset

You can store a preset on your UAFX pedal, and recall it using the right footswitch. All presets you store, and other artist and factory presets, are available in UAFX Control.

When you store a preset while in Live mode, the position of all knobs and switches on the pedal (including ALT values) are saved. When you make a great sound in Live mode, storing it is as easy as holding down the STORE switch until the green PRESET footswitch LED blinks rapidly (about 0.5 seconds).

When you store a preset while in Preset mode, only those knobs and switches that have changed since you loaded the preset are saved. So, when saving in Preset mode, what you hear is what is saved, and not the current positions of the knobs and switches.

To store your sound as a preset

  1. Set your sound as you want it stored in the preset.
  2. Press and hold the STORE switch in the down position until the green PRESET footswitch LED blinks rapidly (about 0.5 seconds).

Preset Notes

  • The settings for Preset mode and Live mode are completely independent.
  • When you move a knob or switch in Preset mode, the settings for the sound immediately jump to the new knob or switch position.
  • You can view and audition all of your pedal's presets with UAFX Control.
  • Presets can only be stored when the pedal is not bypassed.



Lion '68 Controls

The following controls are available on Lion '68.

Volume I (VOL I) and Volume II (VOL II)

Adjusts the amp's channel I and channel II gain. Channel I is brighter and more aggressive as you turn it up, and channel II is darker, with more bottom end. As you increase one or both volume controls, the character of the amp changes, becoming much more saturated and distorted. 

By default, Lion's channels are connected with a Y cable, creating a fuller, more saturated sound, and allowing you to adjust the brighter and darker gain components of the sound. With the UAFX Control app, you can choose the primary input channel, or "jump" the inputs.

To use Volume I or Volume II independently, turn the other channel volume completely down.

Tip: These are the volume controls on the original amp. For clean "post-amp" volume adjustments, use the Output control.


Adjusts the overall output level from the pedal. When Output is set at noon (running direct or into other pedals), it will be roughly the same level as your bypassed volume. 

Output allows you to set the level for your setup. 

Bass / Room

Adjusts two different settings, depending on the position of the Alt / Amp / Store switch.

  • AMP mode: Reduces the low frequency response of the amp's tone stack.
  • ALT mode: Adjusts the amount of room tone mixed into the signal.

Notes and tips

  • Room amount only affects your sound when you use a speaker cabinet. When the speaker cabinet is bypassed, Room has no effect. The Speaker LED blinks rapidly to indicate the knob is inactive.
  • Set Room to noon for a good starting point, and add or remove room to taste. Setting Room fully off is like recording your amp in an isolation booth. Turning up the Room knob adds ambience from the room microphones set up in the tracking room of a studio.
  • There is no fully wet Room sound.

Middle / Presence

Adjusts two different settings, depending on the position of the Alt / Amp / Store switch.

  • AMP mode: Adjusts the mid frequency response of the amp's tone stack.
  • ALT mode: Adjusts the amp's brightness and gain.

Middle and Presence use Notes

  • The Middle control can have a lot of impact. Reduce the mids for Fender-style scooped tones. Increase the mids for more lead impact and warmth.
  • The Presence control controls the overall brilliance and gain of the power amp section in the original amp. Increase presence to add more available gain and edge to the sound.

Treble / Boost

Adjusts two different settings, depending on the position of the Alt / Amp / Store switch.

  • AMP mode: Adjusts the high frequency component of the amp's tone stack.
  • ALT mode: Adjusts the amount of boost applied to the amp circuitry. See Lion '68 Boost for details.

Cab Switch

Push this switch up or down to change the speaker cabinet and microphone. When you push the switch repeatedly in the same direction, the pedal cycles through all available speaker cabinets.

Tip: Register your pedal to get free bonus speaker cabinets.


The currently selected speaker cabinet is indicated by this LED. A red LED indicates that the speaker cabinet printed on the pedal is selected. A bonus speaker cabinet is selected when an LED is green (the bonus speaker cabinets don't have labels).

When the LED is off, the amp is active but no speaker cabinet simulation or room sound is applied.

Tip: When playing through a real guitar amplifier and speaker cabinet, you might want to bypass the speaker cabinet emulation by pressing the pedal's CAB switch until its LED is unlit.

Alt / Amp / Store

In AMP mode, the standard knob controls are available for the amp.

In ALT mode, the Room, Presence, and Boost controls are available on the Bass, Middle, and Treble knobs.

To store a preset, press and hold the ALT/AMP/STORE switch in the down position until the PRESET footswitch LED blinks rapidly (about 0.5 seconds).

Model Switch

Lion '68 includes three independent amplifier models, each of which provides different amp character and features. 

Use the Model switch to select the amp, and the Boost knob to push the input of the amp for more added gain. See Lion '68 Models for more details about the amp models.

  • BASS is based on the classic 100 Watt "Super Bass" amplifier. The Super Bass is great for cleaner tones, fat rhythm tones, and bass. The Super Bass is often chosen by guitarists for its smoothness, richness, and ability to take pedals. All of your Hendrix dream tones are in here. 
  • LEAD is based on the classic 100 W "Super Lead" amplifier. Similar in design to the Super Bass, but with a big reduction in bottom end and an increase in available gain, the Super Lead is where rock rhythm guitar tones live. Lots of crunch, no flabbiness, even some saturation when pushed hard.
  • BROWN takes the Super Lead to a higher gain level, employing several signal chain changes, including a Variac to reduce the voltage and other component changes, to create a classic hot rodded sound that countless players have sought out over time.

Left Switch LED

By default, the left footswitch LED is lit red when Live mode knob and switch settings are active. Other states for the left footswitch LED are detailed in the table below.

Left Footswitch

By default, press to toggle the Live mode sound on/off with the current knob and switch settings. This footswitch can also toggle other options, depending on the footswitch mode, as detailed in the table below.

Preset Footswitch LED

The preset footswitch LED is lit green when stored settings are active. There are other modes for the right footswitch LED, as detailed in the table below.

Right Footswitch

By default, press to toggle the Preset sound on/off. This footswitch can also toggle other options, depending on the pedal footswitch mode, as detailed in the table below.

With UAFX Control, you can change the operation of your pedal and your pedal's footswitches for your amplifier setup and performance preferences.

Lion '68 Cabs

Each speaker, cabinet, and mic setting has a unique sound. Toggle up or down to cycle through the list with the Cab switch. When you register your pedal with UAFX Control software, you get three free bonus cabs (indicated by green LEDs).

Lion '68 bonus speaker cabinets

When you register your pedal using the UA Connect or UAFX Control apps, your free bonus EV12, D65, and V30 speaker cabinets are added to the pedal. To select these speaker cabinets, push the Cab switch until the top, middle, or bottom Cab LED is lit green.


Note: The speaker cabinet labels on the pedal apply only when that speaker switch's LED is red. The labels when the LED is green are only visible in UAFX Control.

JB|GB Red Brown JB 1968 basketweave 4x12 cabinet with vinyl removed, with two Celestion Greenback speaker and two JBL 120F speakers. Both speaker types are miked separately with dynamic 57s, and pre-mixed. Combines the girth and midrange of the Celestion speakers with the high end sizzle of the JBL speakers.
GB25 Green EV12 Classic 12", 200 watt Electro-Voice EVM12L speaker with a massive magnet in a 1x12 cabinet, miked with a 414 condenser mic. Focused single speaker, thick and tight bottom end with airy top end, a wonderful, versatile speaker.
GB30 Green D65 Custom ported 2x12 cabinet with British 65-watt speakers, miked with a 421 dynamic mic and a ribbon 121 mic. Tight bottom end clarity, favored by many blues and rock players.
JB|GB Green Vee30 4x12 cabinet with British V30 speakers, miked with a 414 condenser mic. A standard for modern rock and metal, with a tight bottom end and high end punch. If you want a more scooped sound, this is it.
None Off External No cabinet/mic/room emulation. Use with a real guitar cabinet or external cabinet emulation.

Lion '68 Models

Each amp has a unique gain structure and sound. You increase the amount of gain and the effect of the boost by increasing Volume I and Volume II, and rotating the Boost knob (in ALT mode) clockwise. 

Model Description Notes
Bass The cleaner, higher headroom Super Bass version of the '68 amp, running at 117 volts. The lack of a bright cap prevents this amp from getting overly bright or brittle. Designed with bass players in mind, but extremely popular with guitarists for its darker, mellower sound. A wonderful pedal platform and some nice dark crunch sounds when driven.
Lead The higher gain, brighter Super Lead '68 amp running at 110 volts. The Super Lead amp includes a "bright cap" which increases high end. Our Super Lead model includes the most common modification which removes the bright cap completely (via the UAFX Control app). We've modified the stock bright cap to 100 pF, as used in the earlier JTM 45 amp, for jangly highs without the harshness of the original cap value of 5000 pF.  More gain, more saturation, and a whole lot brighter than the Super Bass; for your classic late '60s and '70s rock tones, push Volume I and Volume II. Use Volume I for brightness, edge, and tight gain, and Volume II to bring in bottom end girth and balance out the high end.
Brown The Super Lead amp, Variac'd down to 90 volts for more sag and thickness, then biased high for aggressive attack and bounce with more sustain and compression. By default the bright cap is removed; you can enable it in UAFX Control for dynamic edginess. Darker, thicker, and more gain. Can get very heavy, with loose, saturated gain at higher Volume settings. Great for leads, rhythms, and very loose and fat cleans on lower Volume settings. 



Lion '68 Boost

Lion's Boost knob adds color and gain from multiple elements with a single control. The Boost elements work together to create harmonic density. As always, use your ears to find the sweet spot.

Turn the Boost knob above minimum to engage the EP-III preamp, adding color and warmth. Increase Boost towards the 10 o'clock position to add clean gain and push the amp's front end. Past 10 o'clock, the midrange boost curve from a graphic EQ pedal adds thick character.

When the Boost is turned all the way down, there is no effect on amp color and gain. 

Note: The Boost knob is only active In ALT mode. 



UAFX Control with Lion '68

With UAFX Control, you can manage your presets, change the operation of Lions's footswitches, change or jump the amp's inputs, adjust the noise gate, adjust the bright cap and ghost note mods, and toggle 4-cable mode for your amplifier setup and performance preferences.

In UAFX Control, tap the icons at the bottom of the screen to access the Presets, Edit, and Settings screens. You may need to scroll down on this screen to see all available settings.

Lion footswitch modes

The footswitch functions can be changed to suit your preferences. You can configure Lion to switch between Live and Preset modes, or have Boost on the left footswitch and toggle between Live/Preset modes on the right footswitch.

Choosing a footswitch mode

To select a footswitch mode, open the Settings screen. Then tap the current footswitch mode (colored bar) and choose a mode from the drop menu.

Note: See Assigning the preset or live sound for information about how to set the pedal sound when you use a footswitch mode that cannot be bypassed.



Live | Preset

In Live | Preset mode, you can access Live mode (knobs and switches) and the stored preset.


  • Left Footswitch toggles the Live sound on/off
  • Right Footswitch toggles the stored preset on/off
  • Pedal can be bypassed
  • 4-cable mode is available

Boost | Live/Preset

In Boost | Live/Preset mode, you can switch Boost on and off, and toggle between Live mode (knobs and switches) and the stored preset.


  • Left Footswitch toggles Boost on/off
  • Right Footswitch toggles between Live mode (red LED) and the stored preset (green LED)
  • Pedal is always on and cannot be bypassed
  • 4-cable mode is not available

Lion 4-cable mode

4-cable mode lets you add another switchable channel to any real guitar amplifier that has an effects loop. This special mode lets you switch between your guitar amplifier's built-in preamp section and the sounds in your pedal.

Warning: Turn off your amplifier before wiring the pedal and enabling 4-cable mode. If you enable 4-cable mode with incorrect wiring, you can cause extreme feedback.

Note: The Room control does not have any effect in 4-cable mode. 

Adjusting Lion Editor settings

Lion includes an editor that allows you to make further adjustments to the amp's input routing, noise gate, and ghost notes.

To open the Lion Editor, tap Edit at the bottom of the UAFX Control screen. 

Note: Lion Editor settings are not global, but apply only to the current Live or Preset sound you are editing. 

Lion Input Routing

To adjust Lion's Input Routing for the current sound, under Input Routing, tap Low, High, or Jump. 


Lion includes detailed modeling of the original amp's inputs. By default, the Lion inputs are routed as if you are plugging into the High inputs with a Y cable. The Y cable method gives you the exact same signal with no coloration or attenuation between the channels. 

When either Volume is on 0, Lion behaves as if you are plugging in to only the High input for the channel that is turned up. You can configure Lion so you can plug into the High input, the Low input, or a "Jump" setting where a patch cable connects the Low input of Channel I to the High input of Channel II.

Note: The Input Routing setting is not global, and applies only to the current Live or Preset sound. Input Routing settings are saved with a preset.

  Input Routing Description
input-routing-low.png LOW Y cable into Low inputs. Cleaner, slightly darker sound. When only one Volume is turned up, you get the sound of only that channel on the Low input. When both channels are above 0, you get the sound of a Y cable plugged into both Low inputs.
input-routing-hi.png HIGH Y cable into High inputs. Brighter sound, with more gain and edge. When only one Volume is turned up, you get the sound of only that channel on the High input. When both Volumes are above 0, you get the sound of a Y cable plugged into both High inputs.
input-routing-jump.png JUMP Replicates the exact signal path of plugging into High input I, and connecting a short patch cable ("jumping") from the Low input of Channel I into the High input of Channel II. Adds some circuit coloration and attenuation to Channel II. Subtle but noticeable tonal differences with the Jump setting include less treble and slightly less gain from Volume II.


Lion mods


Lion includes two custom modifications to further tailor your sound. These modifications are not global, and are applied only to the current Live or Preset sound. Lion's customizations are saved with a preset.

To toggle Ghost Notes or the Bright Cap on/off, tap its control switch. 

Note: The Bright Cap mod is not available on the Bass amp model.

Custom Mod Description
Ghost Notes

The original transformer and power supply for the amp is subject to some extra hum and resulting "ghost notes" — harmonics around certain notes that are the result of intermodulation distortion. When off, the amp switches to

a cleaner power supply that reduces much of this transformer hum, and eliminates these ghost notes. In practice, ghost notes can add some life and "scream" to notes higher up on the guitar neck. By default, ghost notes (the stock amp behavior) are enabled.

Bright Cap Toggles the bright cap on Channel I. The bright cap has the effect of adding brightness at lower gains. The effect is reduced as you increase the gain for Channel I, and completely removed at full gain. Disable the bright cap for a darker sound. The bright cap is on by default on the Lead amp and off on the Brown amp in Live mode, but may be enabled or disabled on presets. This mod is not available on the Bass amp model.


Lion Noise Gate

Toggle the Lion Noise Gate by tapping the purple button next to Noise Gate. Adjust the Noise Gate settings for your current instrument and sound to eliminate any extraneous noise.


Lion's noise gate silences extraneous noise generated by these high gain tube amps by detecting your guitar signal at the input, but acting at the end of the signal chain. This clever design is extremely effective at both detecting and stopping extraneous noise.

Noise Gate setting Description
Threshold Sets the level at which the noise gate opens/closes. Set this while playing with the pickup combination and levels you will normally use. Adjust the threshold until your lightest notes are not cut off, but the noise is suppressed. 
Release Sets the length of time before the noise gate closes after dropping below the threshold. Set this to have a natural release.
Attenuation Sets the level of attenuation. Generally this can be set very high if your other settings are correct. Very high settings will allow absolutely no amplifier noise through the gate; set this lower if you want to allow some noise.
Hold Determines how long the noise gate holds the note after it drops below the threshold, and before the Release time starts. Works in combination with Release to avoid "note chatter." Set this so notes decay naturally.
