Enigmatic Operation

Live Mode and Preset Mode

Note: Enigmatic is in Live | Preset mode by default. You can use UAFX Control to change footswitch assignments.

In Live mode, the sound reflects the current positions of the knobs, switches, and LEDs on the pedal, and the left footswitch toggles the Live mode effect on/off.

In Preset mode, you hear the settings that are stored as a preset, and the current positions of the knobs and switches do not reflect the sound. Instead, all knob and switch positions are internally set to their stored positions, and the right footswitch toggles the preset effect on/off.

You can store a preset you've made with your own settings by holding down the STORE switch until the green PRESET footswitch LED blinks rapidly (about 0.5 seconds)

Live Mode

To enter Live mode, press the left footswitch. Press the left footswitch again to toggle the live effect on/off. The left footswitch LED is lit red when the Live mode effect is on.

Preset Mode

To enter Preset mode, press the right footswitch. Press the right footswitch again to toggle the preset on/off. The right footswitch LED is lit green when the preset is on.

Note: The left and right footswitch functions can be changed in UAFX Control.

Stored Preset

You can store a preset on your UAFX pedal, and recall it using the right footswitch. All presets you store, and other artist and factory presets, are available in UAFX Control.

When you store a preset while in Live mode, the position of all knobs and switches on the pedal (including ALT values) are saved. When you make a great sound in Live mode, storing it is as easy as holding down the STORE switch until the green PRESET footswitch LED blinks rapidly (about 0.5 seconds).

When you store a preset while in Preset mode, only those knobs and switches that have changed since you loaded the preset are saved. So, when saving in Preset mode, what you hear is what is saved, and not the current positions of the knobs and switches.

To store your sound as a preset

1. Set your sound as you want it stored in the preset.
2. Press and hold the STORE switch in the down position until the green PRESET footswitch LED blinks rapidly (about 0.5 seconds).

Preset Notes

• The settings for Preset mode and Live mode are completely independent.
• When you move a knob or switch in Preset mode, the settings for the sound immediately jump to the new knob or switch position.
• You can view and audition all of your pedal's presets with UAFX Control.
• Presets can only be stored when the pedal is not bypassed.

Creating Sounds on Enigmatic

This section will help you to build a sound on your Enigmatic pedal.

Jazz and Rock Tone settings

The Jazz and Rock Tone settings have unique gain structures and sounds, based on their tone stack EQ. In Live Mode, the settings for the Tone Stack EQ (Custom tone), Tone Stack Type, Normal/FET input, FET Trim, and HRM Overdrive EQ are retained with the channel settings. Preamp Boost is a global setting. In Preset Mode, per-channel settings are not retained when you change the Tone switch setting.

Building Sounds with Enigmatic

This diagram shows how you can build an Enigmatic '82 Overdrive Special Amp sound. It illustrates the interactions between different settings that you can change with the pedal’s controls and the UAFX Control app.

Note: This chart is not intended to show the actual circuit topology, but rather how different factors interact to create a sound on Enigmatic.

Using Enigmatic's preamp boost

Enigmatic's preamp boost is switchable from the UAFX Control app, or with the footswitches in Preamp Boost | Live/Preset mode or Overdrive | Preamp Boost mode. See Enigmatic footswitch modes for more information.

Enigmatic's preamp boost, like the original amp, bypasses the tone circuit, and adds significant gain. When the preamp boost is enabled, the tone stack is disabled (like the original hardware), so the Bass, Middle, and Treble knobs have no effect.

However, you can still switch between tone stack EQs and tone stack types in the UAFX Control app. This allows you to configure the tone stack you want when preamp boost is disabled, and to control whether the Deep or Mid circuit is available for your sound.

Deep and Mid still change the sound, even when the tone stack is bypassed.

Using Enigmatic's overdrive

Enigmatic's overdrive circuit adds gain to the amp sound. When the Overdrive knob is at the minimum, the overdrive circuit is disengaged. As you turn the knob up, the amp is pushed first into overdrive, then into distortion, and finally into heavy saturation. Both the Volume knob and the Overdrive knob are active when Overdrive is engaged, and you can adjust the level of gain using both controls.

As with the original hardware, Overdrive is balanced differently from the clean channel level. Like the original amp, Enigmatic includes a Ratio control that you can use to adjust the level of the Overdrive channel to balance with the clean channel. Ratio is available in ALT mode on the Overdrive knob. You may have to turn the Ratio up quite a bit to balance with the clean sound. This might be required when you are using one of the footswitch modes that allows you to switch the Overdrive channel on and off on the same sound (Overdrive | Live/Preset or Overdrive | Preamp Boost).

Using HRM Overdrive EQ

When the Overdrive channel is enabled, the HRM Overdrive EQ circuit can be engaged. On the original hardware, this EQ was available as a set of trim pots on the circuit board. On Enigmatic, HRM Overdrive EQ is enabled and adjusted in the UAFX Control app. The HRM Overdrive EQ is only active when the Overdrive channel is on.

HRM Overdrive EQ has a unique sound that can make subtle or drastic changes to your sound. Unlike the EQ knobs, the HRM Overdrive EQ is available even when Preamp Boost is enabled. See HRM Overdrive EQ for more information.

More tone shaping with Deep/Mid

Each tone stack type (Classic or Skyline) includes further tone shaping with the Deep/Mid switch. The Deep/Mid switch is available on the Bass knob in ALT mode. To engage Deep or Mid, turn the knob past noon.

With the Classic tone stack, the Deep switch cuts some high end, shifting the sound toward the low end. With the Skyline tone stack, the Mid switch adds a thick midrange boost to the sound.

Using Enigmatic's bright switch

Use Enigmatic's bright switch to switch in one of three bright caps from classic amps. The bright switch is adjusted in ALT mode with the Treble knob. As you rotate the knob, you can access four options: bright cap off, 150 pF, 196 pF, and 300 pF. The bright cap off setting is darkest, and higher cap values are progressively brighter,. You can see which bright cap is selected in the UAFX Control app (see Overdrive, Bright, and Deep / Mid info strip for more information).

Enigmatic Controls

The following controls are available on Enigmatic.

Volume { Room }

Adjusts two different settings, depending on the position of the Alt / Amp / Store switch.

• AMP mode: Adjusts the level for the first gain stage of the amp. This controls the gain level of the clean channel, and this gain stage cascades into the Overdrive gain.
• ALT mode: Adjusts the amount of room ambience mixed into the signal.

Notes and tips

• Room amount is only mixed with your sound when you use a speaker cabinet. When the speaker cabinet is bypassed, Room has no effect. In this case, the Speaker LED blinks rapidly to indicate the knob is inactive.
• Set Room to noon for a good starting point, and add or remove room to taste. Setting Room fully off is like recording your amp in an isolation booth. Turning up the Room knob adds ambience from the room microphones set up in the tracking room of a studio.
• There is no fully wet Room sound.

Overdrive { Ratio }

Adjusts two different settings, depending on the position of the Alt / Amp / Store switch.

• AMP mode: Adjusts the amount of overdrive gain. Set to minimum to turn off the Overdrive channel.
• ALT mode: Ratio adjusts the output level of the Overdrive channel.

Notes and tips

• Note that the Volume gain cascades into the Overdrive gain, so both Volume and Overdrive contribute to the overall gain of the amp.
• You can adjust the initial overdrive level with the OD Trim control in the UAFX Control app.
• Generally on this type of amp, Ratio needs to be set fairly high to match the level of the clean channel. This is especially relevant when switching the Overdrive channel on and off with one of the footswitch modes.

Output

Adjusts the overall output level from the pedal. When Output is set at noon (running direct or into other pedals), it will be roughly the same level as your bypassed volume.

Output allows you to set the level for your setup.

Bass { Deep / Mid }

Adjusts two different settings, depending on the position of the Alt / Amp / Store switch.

• AMP mode: Adjusts the low frequency response of the amp's tone stack. EQ Controls are unavailable when Preamp Boost is active.
• ALT mode: Switches the Deep or Mid setting on when above noon. Deep is available with the Classic Tone Stack, and Mid is available with the Skyline Tone Stack. You can set the Tone Stack Type in the UAFX Control app.

Middle { Presence }

Adjusts two different settings, depending on the position of the Alt / Amp / Store switch.

• AMP mode: Adjusts the mid frequency response of the amp's tone stack. EQ Controls are unavailable when Preamp Boost is active.
• ALT mode: Adds high end sparkle to the sound.

Treble { Bright }

Adjusts two different settings, depending on the position of the Alt / Amp / Store switch.

• AMP mode: Adjusts the high frequency response of the amp's tone stack. EQ Controls are unavailable when Preamp Boost is active.
• ALT mode: Switches between four bright cap settings, taken from several original amps: off, 150 pF, 196 pF, and 300 pF. Each value uses approximately 1/4 turn of the knob (you can see the value in the UAFX Control app). Higher cap values are brighter.

Cab Switch

Push this switch up or down to change the speaker cabinet and microphone. When you push the switch repeatedly in the same direction, the pedal cycles through all available speaker cabinets.

Tip: Register your pedal to get six free bonus speaker cabinets.

Cab LED

The currently selected speaker cabinet is indicated by this LED. A red LED indicates that the speaker cabinet printed on the pedal is selected. A bonus speaker cabinet is selected when an LED is green or amber (the bonus speaker cabinets don't have labels).

When the LED is off, the amp is active but no speaker cabinet simulation or room sound is applied.

Tip: When playing through a real guitar amplifier and speaker cabinet, you might want to bypass the speaker cabinet emulation by pressing the pedal's CAB switch until its LED is unlit.

Alt / Amp / Store

• In AMP mode, the standard knob controls are available for the amp.
• In ALT mode, the Room, Ratio, Deep/Mid, Presence, and Bright controls are available on the Volume, Overdrive, Bass, Middle, and Treble knobs.
• To store a preset, press and hold the ALT/AMP/STORE switch in the down position until the PRESET footswitch LED blinks rapidly (about 0.5 seconds).

Tone Switch

Enigmatic includes three independent Tones (similar to channels) accessed from the Tone switch. Two Tones provide classic Tone Stack EQ settings, and one is fully customizable. Each Tone independently stores the settings you configure in the UAFX control app.

Use the Tone switch to select the channel. 

• Rock – More aggressive, punchy, more mids
• Jazz – Mellower, softer, scooped blackface-style EQ
• Custom – Your custom amp

Left Switch LED

By default, the left footswitch LED is lit red when Live mode knob and switch settings are active. Other states for the left footswitch LED are detailed in Enigmatic footswitch modes.

Left Footswitch

By default, press to toggle the Live mode sound on/off with the current knob and switch settings. This footswitch can also toggle other options, depending on the footswitch mode, as detailed in the table below.

Preset Footswitch LED

The preset footswitch LED is lit green when stored settings are active. There are other modes for the right footswitch LED, as detailed in Enigmatic footswitch modes.

Right Footswitch

By default, press to toggle the Preset sound on/off. This footswitch can also toggle other options, depending on the pedal footswitch mode, as detailed in the table below.

Footswitch modes

With UAFX Control, you can change the operation of your pedal and your pedal's footswitches for your amplifier setup and performance preferences.

Enigmatic Cabs

Each speaker, cabinet, and mic setting has a unique sound. Toggle up or down to cycle through the list with the Cab switch. When you register your pedal with UAFX Control software, you get six free bonus cabs (indicated by green and amber LEDs).

Enigmatic bonus speaker cabinets

When you register your pedal using the UA Connect or UAFX Control apps, your free bonus speaker cabinets are added to the pedal. To select these speaker cabinets, push the Cab switch until the top, middle, or bottom Cab LED is lit green or amber.

Note: The speaker cabinet labels on the pedal apply only when that speaker switch's LED is red. The labels when the LED is green and amber are only visible in UAFX Control.

UAFX Control with Enigmatic

With UAFX Control, you can manage your presets, change the operation of Enigmatic's footswitches, and toggle 4-cable mode for your amplifier setup and performance preferences. In addition, you can edit several Enigmatic tone settings:

• Toggle the Normal and FET input and adjust FET Trim
• Toggle the Preamp Boost
• Select the Tone Stack EQ (Custom channel only)
• Select the Tone Stack Type
• Enable and adjust the HRM Overdrive EQ
• Adjust the Master Gain

In UAFX Control, tap the icons at the bottom of the screen to access the Presets, Edit, and Settings screens. You may need to scroll down on this screen to see all available settings.

Enigmatic footswitch modes

The footswitch functions can be changed to suit your preferences. You can configure Enigmatic to switch between Live and Preset modes, or have Boost on the left footswitch and toggle between Live/Preset modes on the right footswitch.

Choosing a footswitch mode

To select a footswitch mode, open the Settings screen. Then tap the current footswitch mode (colored bar) and choose a mode from the drop menu.

Note: See Assigning the preset or live sound for information about how to set the pedal sound when you use a footswitch mode that cannot be bypassed.

 

Live | Preset

In Live | Preset mode, you can access Live mode (knobs and switches) and the stored preset.

• Left Footswitch toggles the Live sound on/off
• Right Footswitch toggles the stored preset on/off
• Pedal can be bypassed
• 4-cable mode is available

Overdrive | Live/Preset

In Overdrive | Live/Preset mode, you can switch the Overdrive channel on and off, and toggle between Live mode (knobs and switches) and the stored preset.

• Left Footswitch toggles Overdrive on/off
• Right Footswitch toggles between Live mode (red LED) and the stored preset (green LED)
• Pedal is always on and cannot be bypassed
• 4-cable mode is not available

Preamp Boost | Live/Preset

In Preamp Boost | Live/Preset mode, you can switch the Preamp Boost on and off, and toggle between Live mode (knobs and switches) and the stored preset.

• Left Footswitch toggles Preamp Boost on/off
• Right Footswitch toggles between Live mode (red LED) and the stored preset (green LED)
• Pedal is always on and cannot be bypassed
• 4-cable mode is not available

Overdrive | Preamp Boost

In Overdrive | Preamp Boost mode, you can toggle the Overdrive channel and the Preamp Boost on and off independently.

• Left Footswitch toggles Overdrive on/off
• Right Footswitch toggles Preamp Boost on/off
• Pedal is always on and cannot be bypassed
• 4-cable mode is not available

Enigmatic 4-cable mode

4-cable mode lets you add another switchable channel to any real guitar amplifier that has an effects loop. This special mode lets you switch between your guitar amplifier's built-in preamp section and the sounds in your pedal.

Warning: Turn off your amplifier before wiring the pedal and enabling 4-cable mode. If you enable 4-cable mode with incorrect wiring, you can cause extreme feedback.

Adjusting Enigmatic Editor settings

Enigmatic includes an editor that allows you to make further adjustments to the sound for each amp channel.

In Live mode, most editor settings apply per-channel. Only the Preamp Boost setting is global.

Preset sounds can have different global settings, but Live mode global settings are restored when you switch back to Live mode.

To open the Editor, tap Edit at the bottom of the UAFX Control screen.

Amps

The Amps section allows you to choose the basic topology of the amp, modeled from real circuits and hardware. An Amp includes the power section, tube, amp biasing, and transformers that contribute to the sound of the amp pedal. Each Amp has a unique sound and feel.

Tap the current selection under Amps to choose an amp from the list.

 

 

Input

The original amp included two inputs. The normal input is fixed, with no gain adjustment. The FET input changes the characteristics of the input and allows you to adjust input gain. FET gain can range from sparkly clean to boosted and slightly distorted, as you increase the FET Trim.

Note: The FET input can be used to increase or decrease gain. At low levels, the FET input can be very quiet.

FET Trim

Adjust this slider for the level of input gain trim you want. This control is only active when the FET input is selected.

Overdrive, Bright, and Deep / Mid info strip

Below the Input section, an info strip shows you the state of the Overdrive, Bright switch, and Mid/Deep controls. When an item is active, its green LED is lit. For the Bright and Mid/Deep switches, the values are listed.

• Toggle Overdrive on/off by turning the Overdrive knob up or all the way down, or by using one of the footswitch modes that toggle Overdrive (Overdrive | Live/Preset or Overdrive | Preamp Boost).
• Toggle the Bright switch with the Treble knob in ALT mode. The Bright switch has four positions: Bright Cap off, 150 pF, 196 pF, or 300 pF.
• Toggle Deep / Mid on and off with the Bass knob in ALT mode. Deep or Mid are enabled when the knob is set past noon.
• Deep is available with the Classic Tone Stack, and Mid is available with the Skyline Tone Stack.

Note: This strip is informational only.

Preamp Boost

Preamp boost lifts the tone stack, increasing the overall gain from the preamp section. When Preamp Boost is engaged, you cannot adjust the EQ with the EQ knobs, but Deep or Mid can still be enabled.

Note: When Preamp Boost is enabled, the Tone Stack Type and Tone Stack EQ (Custom channel) controls are dimmed, but can still be selected. This allows you to adjust whether the Deep/Mid options are available, and to specify the EQ settings for footswitch modes where the Preamp Boost can be toggled on and off (Preamp Boost | Live/Preset and Overdrive | Preamp Boost).

Tone Stack EQ

On the Custom channel and when editing a preset sound, you can select the Tone Stack EQ. Jazz is a mellower EQ setting with reduced high end and flatter response. Rock is more aggressive, louder, and edgier.

Note: In LIve Mode, Jazz and Rock are automatically selected for their respective Tones.

Tone Stack Type

The original amp was available with two tone stack types. Earlier amps had the "classic" EQ which is more like an American blackface-era amp, with a slightly hollower sound and less gain. Later amps had the "Skyline" or "Skyliner" EQ, which was more British-sounding, more aggressive, and higher gain, with a tighter bottom end and accentuated mids and highs.

The Tone Stack Type is interactive with the Deep/Mid switch: the Classic Tone Stack enables the Deep option and the Skyline Tone Stack enables the Mid option.

OD Trim

Adjusts the amount of available gain from the Overdrive channel. Use the OD Trim control for more or less available gain, and the Overdrive knob to set the final gain.

Note: The OD Trim can be used to increase or decrease the available Overdrive amount. At low levels, the overdrive amount (and overall level) can be very low.

HRM Overdrive EQ

The HRM (Hot Rubber Monkey) circuit is a separate passive post-gain tone stack for the Overdrive channel. On the original amp, HRM is adjusted with internal trimmers, and gives an extra set of EQ controls for the overdrive sound. Originally this would have been useful when the tone stack was removed (Preamp Boost engaged). However, HRM provides a unique and distinctive sounding EQ that is useful in many scenarios. HRM tends to be more of a scooped EQ with plenty of low and high end, and you can use HRM to push the overdrive channel into much heavier territory, or into soaring, liquid gain.

Toggle HRM Overdrive EQ with the round button to the left of the label, and adjust the EQ bands with the sliders.

Note: You only hear HRM Overdrive EQ when Overdrive is engaged.

Master Gain

Adjusts the tube power amp output of the pedal. Increase this to add power tube distortion. This control also increases the pedal's output level.

Revert to Default (Live sound only)

Tap to revert to the default Edit screen settings for the Live Sound (knob and switch settings are unchanged).

Restore Preset (Preset sound only)

Tap to revert any changes you have made to the current preset.
