You can separate stems from imported or recorded tracks using LUNA. Stem separation analyzes audio and creates new tracks for the musical parts it identifies. You can use these tracks to learn parts, record your own parts such as vocals or instrument parts, and remix or rearrange a song. 

Stem separation occurs locally on your computer.

Stem separation options

There are three separation options for stems

• 2 stems (vocals and instruments): Use this to easily create a karaoke-style track so you can sing over the instrument track.
• 4 stems (drums, vocals, bass, other): Use this to separate drums, bass, vocals, and other instruments. This is a great option when you want to record your own guitars, bass, or drums, while hearing the rest of the song. 
• 6 stems (drums, vocals, bass, other, guitar, piano): This option is available with a LUNA Studio license only. With this option you can split out piano and guitar tracks in addition to drums, bass, vocals, and other tracks. This allows you to get even more granular, for example, to play your own keyboard part or learn a guitar part.

Separating stems in LUNA Play

LUNA Play makes it easy to separate stems for karaoke-style vocal replacement, to learn parts, or to replace parts with your own takes.

1. Starting on the LUNA Create page, click Split Stems and Jam.
   
2. On the Stem Separate dialog, choose whether to separate two, four, or six stems. You can choose two or four stems with a LUNA Free license, and up to six with a LUNA Studio license. 
3. Drag an audio file into the drag area, or click to load an audio file. 
4. Click Separate Stems. 

The stems are separated, and the session opens in LUNA Play.

Working with stems in LUNA Play

LUNA Play operates differently than the normal LUNA interface. A reduced set of controls and settings are designed to get you quickly recording and mixing audio. 

• To solo a track (listen to it in isolation) in LUNA Play, hover over the track, then click the headphone icon in the lower right corner. You can only solo one track at a time in LUNA Play (LUNA Play is always in Solo Exclusive mode).
  
• To mute (silence) a track in LUNA Play, hover over the track, then click the speaker icon in the lower left corner. You can mute multiple tracks in LUNA Play. 
  
• To record over a track, hover over the track and click the circle at the top left to record enable the track. Place the playhead in the track, the click the record button on the transport. 
  
• By default, LUNA Play records over the current track. You can change the default behavior by clicking the Take area next to the REPLACE text at the lower left of the LUNA Play window, and deselecting .Record over this version. 
  

Separating stems in LUNA or LUNA Studio

1. Select an audio clip or a range of audio to separate.
2. Right-click on the selection and choose Separate Stems... or choose Edit > Separate Stems... from the LUNA menus. 
3. In the Separate Stems popover, choose the audio tracks to create. You can choose two or four stems with a LUNA Free license, and up to six with a LUNA Studio license. 
4. To create only specific tracks, deselect any track you don't want to create. For example, when separating Vocals and Instruments, you can deselect Vocals to create only the instrument track. 
   
5. After selecting/deselecting tracks, click OK.

Separate stems are created and added to the session.
