Why am I unable to assign certain outputs in Console?

This article refers to output assignments using Apollo Thunderbolt devices.

Note: In UAD v9.0 and later, the Core Audio panel is labeled as the I/O Matrix panel.

There are a few different features in UAD Console that will cause particular outputs to appear grayed out and in italics on the Core Audio panel of UAD Console Settings. If anything is routed to particular outputs from within Console, those outputs become unavailable in the Core Audio driver and you will no longer be able to route audio to these outputs from within your DAW.

Here's what to look for:

  1. Flex Routing
Note: Flex Routing is not available with Apollo Twin interfaces.
The Flex Routing feature lets you route UAD Console inputs back out to particular outputs of your Apollo via the OUTPUT menu above the fader for each UAD Console input. If an input is Flex Routed to Line Output 6 for example, Line Output 6 will appear grayed out in the Core Audio panel in the Console Settings and you will not be able to route signal to this output from within your DAW.

To make the output available again, simply set the OUTPUT menu back to MONITOR and it will appear solid in the Core Audio list again.

You can also reset the Flex Routing for all UAD Console inputs by creating a new UAD Console session. To do this, navigate to Console > Menu > File > New.

For more information on Flex Routing, see Output Flex Routing in the UAD Console Manual.

  2. Cue Bus Routing
Note: Cue Bus routing does not apply to Apollo Twin
If your Cue buses are routed to line outputs of your Apollo, these line outputs will appear grayed out on the Core Audio panel in UAD Console Settings and you will not be able to route signal to these outputs from within your DAW.

To make sure your Cue buses are not routed to any line outputs, first navigate to Console > Settings > Hardware and set the CUE BUS COUNT to 4. Next, go back to the main UAD Console window and click the CUE OUTPUTS button on the right hand side of the screen. On the CUE OUTPUTS popover, make sure that the four Cue buses are not being routed to any of your line outputs using the OUTPUT menu for each Cue bus.

For more information on Cue Bus routing, see the Cues section in the UAD Console Manual.

  3. ALT Monitoring
When ALT Monitoring is enabled, the first four line outputs of your Apollo will automatically become grayed out and unavailable for routing from within the DAW - when enabled, these outputs are used as alternate monitoring paths. To disable ALT Monitoring, navigate to Console > Settings > Hardware and set ALT COUNT to 0 (having ALT COUNT set to 1 makes Line Outputs 1/2 unavailable, having ALT COUNT set to 2 makes Line Outputs 1-4 unavailable).

For more information on ALT Monitoring, see the Monitor Column section in the UAD Console Manual.
