Initializing AAX 64 for Windows

Important: To use Avid Pro Tools 11 or Pro Tools 12 with UAD AAX 64 plug-ins under Windows, the following steps are required. This procedure must be performed each time an updated version of UAD software is installed:

  1. Install the latest UAD software. Be sure to restart the computer after installation.
  2. Open the Pro Tools application. The UAD AAX 64 plug-ins are automatically scanned during launch.
  3. Click "No" when Pro Tools displays a message indicating some UAD AAX plug-ins failed to load. This message can be safely dismissed.
  4. After all plug-in scans are complete, QUIT Pro Tools. The UAD AAX 64 plug-ins are now properly initialized and ready for use the next time Pro Tools is opened.

Changing Apollo FireWire/Thunderbolt Connectivity

  • All Apollo FireWire models can be upgraded to Thunderbolt connectivity with the Thunderbolt Option Card.
  • To upgrade an Apollo with FireWire firmware to Thunderbolt connectivity, simply install the Thunderbolt Option Card, connect the unit to a Thunderbolt port, and follow the on-screen instructions.

  • The UAD Meter & Control Panel application can be used to restore FireWire connectivity to Apollo FireWire models that have been updated with Thunderbolt firmware.
    • To change the Apollo firmware from Thunderbolt to FireWire, select “Revert to FireWire connectivity…” from the UAD Meter Menu, then follow the on-screen instructions.
    • Note: The new menu function only appears when an Apollo or Apollo 16 FireWire unit (silver rack models only) is equipped with the Thunderbolt Option Card, the unit is connected to the computer via Thunderbolt, and Thunderbolt firmware is installed in the unit.

Firmware Update Information

  • This release contains a firmware update for Apollo Twin Thunderbolt.
  • For optimum results, always update Universal Audio device firmware by clicking "Load" when prompted by the UAD software.

Details About This Release

Corrected DSP allocations for next-gen Apollo 8/8p/16mkII models
  • UAD DSP loads are now properly allocated with next-generation (black) Apollo 8, Apollo 8p, and Apollo 16 mkII rack models. In UAD v8.6 and earlier versions, UAD DSP loads were under-allocated with these models which could result in unreported DSP overloads and audio artifacts.
  • With these Apollo models, when sessions that were saved with UAD v8.6 (and lower) are subsequently opened in UAD v8.7 (and higher), the session may report higher UAD loads. If the prior session exceeds the corrected DSP allocations, a "DSP exceeded" dialog will appear and any UAD plug-ins that cannot load are disabled as originally intended.

About Legacy plug-in renaming
  • Older UAD plug-ins (1176LN/1176SE, LA2A, Pultec, Pultec-Pro) that are supplanted by newer model plug-ins of the same hardware (UA 1176 Classic Limiter Collection, Teletronix LA-2A Classic Leveler Collection, Pultec Passive EQ Collection) are appended with “Legacy” in the plug-in name to improve differentiation between the older and newer models and so that they are alphabetically adjacent in plug-in lists.
  • When DAW sessions containing the older plug-ins are loaded, the renamed Legacy plug-ins are loaded automatically, and all previous settings are retained.
  • (Pultec, Pultec-Pro) These original plug-ins are renamed to “Pultec EQP-1A Legacy” and “Pultec-Pro Legacy”

General Information About This Release

(Mac) Audio Units plug-in rescan is required

The UAD Audio Units plug-ins may need to be rescanned before they will be recognized by the host software as 64-bit capable. Follow this procedure to force a rescan of all Audio Units plug-ins for all Audio Units hosts (this procedure is unnecessary if already performed for UAD v6.4.1 public beta):

  1. Install UAD v6.5.0 software then restart the system.
  2. Quit all Audio Units plug-in host applications.
  3. Delete the Audio Units cache file. The file location is: ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.audiounits.cache
(Note that "~" indicates the Library folder at the root of the current user's Home folder, not the Library folder at the root of the hard disk)
  4. Launch the Audio Units host application. The "auval" process will launch and rescan all Audio Units plug-ins automatically.

(Mac) Using DAWs in 64-bit mode

To use the 64-bit versions of UAD plug-ins, the host DAW software must be in 64-bit mode. To put Mac applications that support both 32-bit and 64-bit operation into 64-bit mode:

  1. Quit application (if open)
  2. In the OS X Finder, navigate to: /Applications
  3. Single-click the application to select (not open) the file
  4. Select "Get Info" from the File menu
  5. In the Info window, uncheck the "Open in 32-bit mode" option
  6. Close the Info window. The application will open in 64-bit mode the next time it is launched.

More Detail for UAD v6.3.2

  • Mono VST versions are not included for new UAD plug-ins:

The monophonic VST versions of UAD plug-ins that can be optionally installed — those with "(m)" in the plug-in name — are no longer developed for new UAD plug-ins. The mono VST versions of prior UAD plug-ins can still be optionally installed for compatibility with older sessions that contain UAD (m) plug-ins.

Note: The standard VST plug-ins (which support stereo and mono configurations) do not consume more UAD DSP when loaded in supported DAWs that use true-mono processing (Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Cubase, Nuendo). However, some supported DAWs (Live and Sonar) do not use true-mono processing on mono signals.

Additionally, some UAD plug-ins do not use less DSP even in a true-mono configuration. For details about mono vs. stereo DSP usage, see the UAD Instance Count Chart.

Studer A800:
  • Support for ganged preset loads via UAD Toolbar: If the Studer A800 "Gang Controls" parameter is enabled, and a Studer A800 preset is loaded using the UAD Toolbar (at bottom of the plug-in interface), the settings in the loaded preset is now pushed to all instances of the plug-in.
  • Resolved crash issue using ganged controls in some hosts: Hosts that were affected include Image Line FL Studio, Ableton Live, and Steinberg Cubase/Nuendo.
UAD-2 Firmware Update:
  • UAD v5.9.0 includes a firmware update that improves stability and performance for all UAD-2 devices.
  • The firmware is updated automatically by the UAD installer. If the UAD-2 device is not installed when the UAD installer is run, the firmware will be updated the next time the UAD Meter & Control Panel application is launched and the UAD-2 is installed.
  • Be careful not to interrupt power to the computer while the firmware is updating.
Additional Notes:
  • The "Home" and "End" keyboard shortcuts have been removed from UAD plug-ins. Depending on the parameter being adjusted with these shortcuts (e.g., gain), extreme volume jumps could have occurred unintentionally.
  • (Cooper Time Cube) Mono instances of Cooper Time Cube no longer boosts dry signal by +6 dB. In versions prior to version 5.9.0, when UAD Cooper Time Cube was used in a mono-in/mono-out configuration, the dry signal was +6 dB louder than intended if not set to 100% wet. This anomaly has been resolved in v5.9.0. Note about session compatibility:  If a session created in UAD v5.8.1 (and prior) uses Cooper Time Cube in a mono-in/mono-out configuration, and that session is loaded under UAD v5.9.0, the dry volume of the Cooper Time Cube instances will be 6 dB lower if not set to 100% wet.
  • As of UAD v5.9.0, documentation for UAD Powered Plug-Ins is installed into a "Documentation" subfolder. All documentation files (except the ReadMe) can be found after v5.9.0 installation in these locations:

    Windows: Start Menu>All Programs>UAD Powered Plug-Ins>Documentation
    Macintosh: Startup Disk/Applications/Powered Plug-Ins Tools/Documentation

UAD-2:
Mac:
  • UAD drivers are now compatible with 64-bit kernel mode
  • Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" is no longer supported

More Detail for UAD v5.8.0

About the new UAD SSL E Series Channel Strip and UAD SSL G Series Bus Compressor
  • The UAD 4K Channel Strip and UAD 4K Bus Compressor were originally released as emulations of the SSL E Channel Strip and SSL G Bus Compressor. Solid State Logic has since authenticated the plug-ins, and after adding enhancements according to their specifications, they are now officially rebranded and licensed by Universal Audio.
  • Although the original UAD 4K Channel Strip and UAD 4K Bus Compressor plug-ins can no longer be purchased, they are still included during installation to retain backwards compatibility with existing sessions.
Mac:
  • UAD-2 drivers are now compatible with 64-bit kernel mode. This change enables the use of UAD-2 Powered Plug-Ins when the OS X kernel is running in 64-bit mode (the default mode on the latest Mac Pro systems). Only the UAD-2 drivers are 64-bit; the UAD-2 plug-ins still operate in 32-bit mode. Note there are no 64-bit drivers for UAD-1 devices.
  • Mac OS 10.4 "Tiger" is no longer supported as of UAD v5.8.0. Many older operating systems still run with prior UAD versions; see the UAD Software Archives for older UAD software and a list of which operating systems they work with.

Version 5.7.0 - September 23, 2010

All Platforms:
  • UAD VCA VU is now officially licensed and renamed to UAD dbx 160
UAD-2:
  • New delay plug-in: EP-34 Classic Tape Echo
  • Firmware update resolves potential flash memory errors
Win:
  • UAD Meter settings are now obeyed under certain DAWs with Vista/Win7
  • (RTAS) Manley Massive Passive and Precision Enhancer Hz are now installed on non-english language systems

More Detail for UAD v5.7.0

Attention Windows 7 & Vista users:
  • UAD Meter settings are now obeyed under certain DAWs with Vista/Win7. Due to changes required for this fix, the UAD Meter "Configuration" and "Run On" settings may revert to default values after running the v5.7.0 installer. Please make note of the settings in the Configuration Tab and Plug-in Tab before upgrading to v5.7.0. Additionally, if multiple users are setup under Vista/Win7, please run the installer from within each user account.
UAD VCA VU is now UAD dbx 160
  • As of UAD v5.7.0, the prior "UAD VCA VU" compressor plug-in is renamed to "UAD dbx 160." Our classic compressor/limiter plug-in is now officially sanctioned and licensed by dbx®. Please be aware of the following conditions when loading sessions created with UAD v5.6.0 (and earlier).
  • VCA VU>dbx 160 Session Compatibility: There are a few known cases where a host application is relying on the plug-in name rather than its unique software identifier key. In these cases, the host will not be able to find the "new" plug-in in v5.7.0 and use it in sessions created with earlier versions (a workaround is below). These known hosts are: Magix Samplitude, Sony Acid, Sony Vegas, Presonus StudioOne, Steinberg Wavelab, Apple Soundtrack Pro, and BIAS Peak Pro/LE (applies only to Vbox presets). The workaround for these hosts is:
    1. Quit the host application.
    2. Make a copy of the UAD dbx 160 plugin file/bundle.
    3. Rename this copy to "UAD VCA VU" (retain the file extension).
    4. Relaunch the host application. You should now have a "dbx 160" plug-in and "VCA VU" plug-in available in the host.
    5. Copy settings from the session's active "VCA VU" using the UAD Toolbar (in the UAD plug-in window).
    6. Replace the "VCA VU" instance with the "dbx 160".
    7. Paste the copied "VCA VU" settings into the "dbx 160" instance.
Note: This workaround does not work for Audio Units plug-ins under Presonus StudioOne on Mac. There is currently no known workaround for this host.
  • UAD dbx 160 Preset Location: With the renaming of VCA VU to dbx 160, your host application may load/save presets from a different location than was previously used for VCA VU. If you saved VCA VU presets using the UAD Toolbar (at the bottom of the UAD plug-in window), you may want to move any existing presets from the old location to the new "UAD dbx 160" preset folder in the same parent folder:
    Macintosh:
    Old path: Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Universal Audio/Presets/UAD VCA VU/
    New path: Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Universal Audio/Presets/UAD dbx 160/
    Windows:
    Old path: C:\Program Files\Universal Audio\Powered Plug-ins\Presets\UAD VCA VU\
    New path: C:\Program Files\Universal Audio\Powered Plug-ins\Presets\UAD dbx 160\
Note: Your host application likely saves presets in a similar manner and the same preset migration is recommended for wherever those presets are stored (the location varies for each host).
UAD-2 Firmware Update
  • The UAD-2 firmware update in UAD v5.7.0 prevents potential errors related to the onboard flash memory. This firmware update is recommended for all UAD-2 users.
  • The firmware is updated automatically by the UAD installer. If the UAD-2 is not installed when the UAD installer is run, the firmware will be updated the next time the UAD Meter & Control Panel application is launched and the UAD-2 is installed.
  • Be careful not to interrupt power to the computer while the firmware is updating.
(Mac) About 32-bit kernel mode
  • The most recent Apple Mac Pro systems (the Mid 2010 "Westmere" models) boot Snow Leopard in 64-bit kernel mode by default, instead of 32-bit kernel mode as in prior models.
  • Because the UAD v5.7.0 drivers do not support running under Snow Leopard in 64-bit kernel mode, if booted in default mode, UAD devices will show as "Not Found" when launching the UAD Meter & Control Panel or instantiating UAD Powered Plug-Ins.
  • To resolve this issue, simply update to UAD v5.8.0 (or higher), which includes 64-bit UAD drivers.
  • If you don't want to update to v5.8.0 or higher, you can boot your system into 32-bit kernel mode by holding down the "3" and "2" number keys on your keyboard when powering up the machine. There is also a more persistent solution by setting the kernel architecture boot flag via the Terminal. See Apple's knowledge base support document for more details.

More Detail for UAD v5.6.0

UAD Plate 140 is now UAD EMT 140
  • As of UAD v5.6.0, the prior "UAD Plate 140" reverb plug-in is renamed to "UAD EMT 140." Our plate reverb plug-in is now officially sanctioned and licensed by EMT Studiotechnik GmbH, and it offers several additional controls over the prior plug-in. Please be aware of the following conditions when loading sessions created with UAD v5.5.0 (and earlier).
  • Plate 140 >EMT 140 Session Compatibility: There are a few known cases where a host application is relying on the plug-in name rather than its unique software identifier key. In these cases, the host will not be able to find the "new" plug-in in v5.6.0 and use it in sessions created with earlier versions (a workaround is below).
    2. Make a copy of the UAD EMT 140 plugin file/bundle.
    3. Rename this copy to "UAD Plate 140" (retain the file extension).
    4. Relaunch the host application. You should now have a "EMT 140" plug-in and "Plate 140" plug-in available in the host.
    5. Copy settings from the session's active "Plate 140" using the UAD Toolbar (in the UAD plug-in window).
    6. Replace the "Plate 140" instance with the "EMT 140".
    7. Paste the copied "Plate 140" settings into the "EMT 140" instance.
Note: This workaround does not work for Audio Units plug-ins under Presonus StudioOne on Mac. There is currently no known workaround for this host.
  • UAD EMT 140 Preset Location
With the renaming of Plate 140 to EMT 140, your host application may load/save presets from a different location than was previously used for Plate 140. If you saved Plate 140 presets using the UAD Toolbar (at the bottom of the UAD plug-in window), you may want to move any existing presets from the old location to the new "UAD EMT 140" preset folder in the same parent folder:
    Macintosh:
    Old path: Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Universal Audio/Presets/UAD Plate 140/
    New path: Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Universal Audio/Presets/UAD EMT 140/
    Windows:
    Old path: C:\Program Files\Universal Audio\Powered Plug-ins\Presets\UAD Plate 140\
    New path: C:\Program Files\Universal Audio\Powered Plug-ins\Presets\UAD EMT 140\
Note: Your host application likely saves presets in a similar manner and the same preset migration is recommended for wherever those presets are stored (the location varies for each host).
UAD 4K Channel Strip Q Control Changes
  • The UAD 4K Channel Strip in UAD v5.6.0 has minor changes to the taper of its Q controls which more accurately emulate the hardware. Sessions saved under UAD v5.5.0 (and earlier) will load under v5.6.0 with new/correct knob positions, but the processing is not affected and resulting audio will not be different from v5.5.0.
UAD EL7 FATSO Sr. Interface Changes
  • The color order of the LEDs for HP Filter, Attack, and Release have been reversed from earlier versions. Existing saved settings/sessions are preserved.
  • The 100ms Attack Time label has been changed to 60ms to better reflect actual attack time. Audio processing has not changed, only the interface.
  • Minor changes have been made to the Attack and Release compression curves to more closely match the Empirical Labs reference hardware.
Windows UAD-2 Driver improvements
  • The "Clear CPU Affinity" setting that was introduced in UAD v5.5.0 has been replaced with "Enable CPU Optimization" (clearing the CPU affinity is no longer necessary with the new option). This new "Enable CPU Optimization" option enables significant UAD-2 driver performance enhancements (reduced host CPU loads and host CPU spiking) for all Windows OS platforms, particularly in cases where a low ASIO buffer size is in use and/or heavy graphics activity.
  • This setting is enabled by default, and is recommended for all UAD-2 users running Windows.
UAD-2 Firmware Update
  • The UAD-2 firmware update in UAD v5.6.0 ensures the UAD-2 DSP card properly re-initializes itself during a computer reboot/restart. Prior to this firmware update, the UAD-2 may not re-initialize itself during the computer's restart sequence and could result in the hardware not being recognized, or the DSPs crashing on launching of the UAD Meter or UAD plug-ins. This should also resolve cases of DSP Code "Error 74" occurring while using UAD plug-ins.

More Detail for UAD v5.5.0

  • Important note for RTAS users running Windows Vista: The Mellowmuse ATA v1.4 plug-in for RTAS included in the UAD v5.5.0 installer will not load under Windows Vista, causing an "invalid authorization error" when Pro Tools scans the ATA plug-in. This issue does not occur under Windows XP. If you run RTAS under Vista, we recommend obtaining the currently available ATA plug-in version directly from theMellowmuse ATA website. This issue will be resolved in a future release and we apologize for any inconvenience. The UAD installer overwrites the currently installed ATA version with the 1.4 version. Therefore, install any ATA version other than v1.4 AFTER installing UAD v5.5.0.
  • (UAD-2 SOLO/Laptop) UAD v5.5.0 requires a firmware update. The SOLO/Laptop firmware is updated automatically by the UAD v5.5.0 installer. If the SOLO/Laptop is not installed when the UAD installer is run, the firmware will be updated the next time the UAD Meter & Control panel is launched and the SOLO/Laptop is installed. Be careful not to interrupt power to the computer while the firmware is updating.
  • (Mac) The UAD v5.5.0 firmware enables "Higher Performance" graphics mode support on MacBook Pro "unibody" systems with UAD-2 SOLO/Laptop. Prior UAD versions required "Better battery life" graphics mode. The graphics mode is set in the System Preferences>Energy Saver pane (this option is not available on all systems).

Version 5.4.1 - September 3, 2009

UAD-2:
  • (FATSO Jr./Sr.) Minor functional and sonic changes improve usability and emulation accuracy:
  • All LEDs turn off when power disabled
  • Ch 2 parameters default to OFF/"0" in mono instance
  • Improvements to interaction between Compressor threshold and Tranny circuit
  • Removed discontinuities in the saturation curve at clip level
  • Copy+Paste settings from mono to stereo now working
  • IMPORTANT: FATSO Jr./Sr. v5.4.1 session and preset settings are not backwards compatible with v5.4.0
Windows:
  • New "Clear CPU Affinity" setting reduces CPU spiking on most multiprocessor systems (UAD-2 only)

More Detail for UAD v5.4.1

  • IMPORTANT: FATSO Jr./Sr. v5.4.1 session and preset settings are not backwards compatible with v5.4.0. If a session containing UAD FATSO Jr./Sr. is loaded under v5.4.1 and saved, then if the session is reloaded under v5.4.0, the FATSO settings from v5.4.1 will be permanently lost. This applies to FATSO presets as well (there is no way to transfer FATSO settings from v5.4.1 back to v5.4.0).
  • (UAD-2 Windows) UAD v5.4.1 introduces the new "Clear CPU Affinity" setting in the UAD Meter & Control Panel "Configuration" pane. Enabling this setting automatically clears processor affinity settings when UAD-2 plug-ins are loaded on multiprocessor systems. This may help reduce CPU overloading and spiking behavior in certain hosts, by forcing UAD-2 plug-ins to run all processors instead of having an "affinity" (preference) for one particular processor. The default value is OFF. If UAD-2 plug-ins are already loaded when the Clear CPU Affinity setting is changed, the host application must be restarted for the change to take effect. Clear CPU Affinity has no effect on single processor systems. If the multiprocessor setting in the host application preferences is disabled then re-enabled, the Clear CPU Affinity setting will no longer have any effect. Therefore, for best results, enable the UAD Meter's Clear CPU Affinity setting AFTER changing the host multiprocessor preference setting.
  • (RTAS) UAD v5.4.1 does not include the latest version of the Mellowmuse ATA RTAS plug-in. We recommend downloading and installing the latest ATA version after updating to UAD v5.4.1. The latest ATA version is available directly from the Mellowmuse website.

  • (Mac) Pro Tools 8 no longer hangs using Precision Multiband on UAD-2

More Detail for UAD v5.4.0

  • (Mac AU) Fairchild Mono has been removed from UAD v5.3.1 (and higher). Loading a session containing Fairchild Mono with UAD v5.4.0 (and higher) will cause a "plug-in not found" error, and the Fairchild Mono settings will be lost if the session is then saved. To convert v5.3.0 (and earlier) sessions that use Fairchild Mono for v5.3.1 and higher compatibility: 1. Install UAD v5.3.0 (or earlier) before opening the session containing UAD Fairchild Mono. 2. For each UAD Fairchild Mono instance, load a regular UAD Fairchild in the same track, group/buss, or output. 3. Use the UAD plug-in toolbar to copy/paste the settings from each Mono instance to its corresponding regular instance. 4. Delete the Fairchild Mono instances. 5. Save the session.
